TSPU is the successor of the Tomsk Teachers' Institute, established on July 1, 1902 by the Highest order of the Emperor Nicholas II.
The aim of Tomsk State Pedagogical University is to serve as a leading regional center for world-class applied and fundamental scientific research, advanced training and continuing education of personnel for the social sphere, organizations of general and professional education, and consolidation of intellectual resources to promote the socio-economic development of the Tomsk region and the Russian Federation as a whole, formation and development of competitive human capital in the region through the creation and implementation of innovative services and developments.
Over the long years of the University's history, many scientific schools have been formed and won scientific recognition.
Thus, the scientific school on the problem of " Quantum field theory and gravity "(professors I. L. Bukhbinder, P. M. Lavrov, V. V. Obukhov, S. D. Odintsov, I. L. Shapiro, K. E. Osetrin, V. Ya. Epp, etc.), according to Russian and foreign experts, performs research at the world level. In 2019, I. L. Buchbinder, the head of the school, won the region prize in education, science, health and culture, in the nomination "Award to Scientific and Scientific-pedagogical Workers Who Have Made a Significant Personal Contribution to the Development of Science and Education in Tomsk Region". In 2019, one of the young scientists of the theoretical physicists scientific school performed a Presidential grant to support young scientists with PhDs on the topic "Supersymmetric quantum field theory and higher spin fields in various dimensions".
Scientists of the other scientific school in the field of Earth Sciences under the title "Bogs and biosphere", in 2019 continued to work on the project in the framework of the basic part of state task of the Ministry of Science and higher education of the Russian Federation on the subject: "Regularities of functioning and evolution of swamp ecosystems in Siberia under changing climatic factors" The leader of this school is L. I. Inisheva, corresponding member of RAS, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor.

Tomsk Polytechnic University is Federal State Autonomous Educational Institution of Higher Education "National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University" was established by order of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation No. 545 dated may 15, 2014 by changing the type of the existing Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Professional Education "National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University", established on April 29, 1896 by Emperor Nicholas II.
